The two countries, which backed different sides in the rift between the rebels, agreed on Tuesday to send senior generals to ensure that the ceasefire holds and to investigate how the fighting began in the first place. The two generals the Ugandan army commander, J J Adongo, and the Rwandan chief of staff, Kayumba Nyamwasa will be based in Kisangani while efforts to defuse the tension continue. The fighting in Kisangani stemmed from conflict over which of the rebel groups should sign the peace agreement ending the wider conflict in Congo. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
