Basketball star to build Congo hospital

Kinshasa is desperately short of health facilities

The United States-based Congolese basketball star, Dikembe Mutombo, is planning to build a new hospital in Kinshasa, says the Pan-African News Agency.

The hospital is likely to have 300 beds and cost $44m, according to Pana.

Dikimbe Mutombo is reported to have paid $3m towards the cost of a feasibility study and now plans to start raising funds to raise the amount needed to start construction.

Mr Mutombo, who plays for the Atlanta Hawks, is ranked among the top 10 players in the National Basketball Association.

He currently owns a transport company in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The country - which is currently in the midst of civil war - has barely 85,000 hospital beds to serve a population of 47 million people.
