The army says it is weakening the rebels but the raids continue
At least 20 people have been killed in northern Uganda in an attack by the rebel Lord's Resistance Army.

Guerrillas attacked a camp for displaced people in Kitgum district early on Friday, a UN official in the area and other sources said.

The rebels shot and hacked people to death, according to witnesses.

The LRA, which has been fighting the government of President Yoweri Museveni for 18 years, is known for attacking civilians and abducting children.

The military has claimed significant successes against the rebels in recent months.

On Friday President Museveni told parliament that the army had killed 781 northern rebels and freed 1,565 hostages since January.
