16 June: The president of South Africa's constitutional court, Arthur Chastalson, takes the oath of office from Thabo Mbeki before a crowd of dignitaries at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
Nelson Mandela congratulated the new president as he arrived at the inauguration ceremony with his wife Graca Machel.
As Mr Mbeki's speech drew to a close, three South African Airways Jumbo jets staged a fly-past before a choir celebrated the new president's inauguration.
