Ivory Coast bans student protest

The Security Minister of Ivory Coast, Marcel Dibonan Kone, has announced that a sit- in by university students planned for later on Tuesday is being banned by the government.

The minister also said that the police had been told to arrest the organisers of the sit-in.

The demonstration was called after six students were given prison sentences for their involvement in riots earlier this month.

Earlier, the government said that security forces had found arms and explosives in student residences searched at the weekend in Abidjan and Bouake.

Student leaders have since denied possessing any weapons.
