Opposition politican in DR Congo turns down cabinet job

One of two opposition politicians in the Democratic Republic of Congo who were nominated for a post in President Kabila's government has turned down the offer.

The man, Frederic Kibassa Maliba, who's a top official of the opposition Union for Democracy and Social Progress UDPS had been named as deputy minister of Mines.

But his spokesman said that Mr Maliba had not been consulted and did not approve of the appointment.

Another senior UDPS politician, Fernand Tala Ngai, was named as deputy finance minister in what correspondents said was an attempt by Mr Kabila to broaden his government.
