Botswana athlete sings for gold
Nigerian athlete
The home nation leads the medal table
The high-jump winner at the All Africa Games had to work hard for his gold medal by singing at the ceremony.

Twice the Botswana national anthem was introduced only to be met with silence, before the embarrassed announcer handed over his microphone to the athlete.

Kabelo Mmono, appearing on the big screen in Nigeria's national stadium, then sang clearly and in tune.

After the ceremony, the shy athlete told the BBC he had not expected to perform but had "surprised himself".

According to the BBC's Jenny Horrocks in Abuja, it was a very moving moment, which prompted even hard bitten reporters to stand up out of respect.

The organisers of the All Africa Games hastily postponed the final athletics medal ceremony at the Games - the 4 X 400m men's relay.

This was also won by sporting minnows Botswana, who beat hot favourites Nigeria, with a storming run.

That medal ceremony passed off without a hitch on Thursday morning, after the band managed to locate the anthem.
