Somalia arrests terror suspect
Paradise Hotel bombing
Kenyans have borne the brunt of al-Qaeda attacks in the region

A Yemeni man accused of involvement in terror attacks in East Africa has been arrested in Somalia and flown to Kenya.

Kenyan National Security Minister Chris Murungaru said the man was suspected of being a member of the al-Qaeda network.

Earlier reports from the Somali capital, Mogadishu, said that a wounded man had been handed over to United States FBI agents.

Al-Qaeda was blamed for last November's attack on Paradise Hotel near the Kenyan resort of Mombasa, which left 15 people dead.

It was also blamed for the 1998 attacks on US embassies in Nairobi and Dar-es-Salaam, in which more than 200 people died.

'Peace-loving Somalis'

Somalia has long been seen as a possible haven for al-Qaeda operatives.

Its Transitional National Government has been accused of being associated with Islamic extremists, charges it vigorously denies.

"This particular arrest was a joint effort by our security agencies and some peace-loving Somalian leaders who do not want to see terrorists operate in their country," said a statement from Mr Murungaru.

An information officer in the TNG told Reuters news agency that militiamen had taken the man from a hospital and handed him over to the FBI agents.

Staff at the hospital said the man was known as Issa and was travelling on a South African passport, reports the French news agency, AFP.

Last week, the US and United Kingdom Governments warned their citizens to beware of possible terror attacks in East Africa.
