Kofi Annan in Wetsern Sahara

The United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan, has arrived in the disputed territory of Western Sahara -- the second stop of his ten-day tour of NorthAfrica.

The trip is part of the UN effort to resolve the long-running conflict over Western Sahara.

Morocco's move to annex it in the mid-1970's sparked a war with the Polisario Front, which lays claim to the territory.

A UN-brokered referendum on the future of Western Sahara is scheduled for next month, but correspondents say it seems unlikely it will take place on time because of disagreement over voter registration.
