Sudan peace 'possible' - US envoy
The United States special envoy to Sudan, former senator John Danforth, says that a peace deal can be reached to end the country's long-running civil war. In a report to the White House, Mr Danforth said America should act as a catalyst for peace efforts already led by Sudan's neighbour, Kenya rather than launch a separate peace initiative. He recommended that President Bush should continue to put a high priority on humanitarian assistance. The report also said that the Sudanese Government should share oil revenue with the rebels and accept international monitoring of religious freedom as part of a just peace. Government forces from the mainly Arab, Muslim north have been fighting rebels from the Christian and animist south since 1983. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
