East African summit on DR Congo

The Presidents of Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya are expected to discuss the civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo at a one-day summit today.

A Kenyan spokesman said President Moi would host the talks in Nairobi.

On Saturday, rebel forces in the Congo denied government reports that there was fighting around the strategically-important town of Kindu, which the rebels captured last week.

The government had earlier said its forces had launched a sustained bombardment of rebel positions at Kindu, which is an important gateway to the south of the country.
