Nigerian church stampede kills 14

Police in Nigeria have confirmed that 14 people were killed in a stampede at a Catholic prayer service in the south-east of the country.

The police chief of Enugu state, Idris Mohammed, told Reuters news agency that they were investigating reports that the stampede was triggered by the arrival of armed men inside the venue.

Press reports have quoted church sources as describing the incident, which happened on Thursday, as a kind of terrorism.

The weekly service, led by a charismatic priest, Father Ejike Mbaka, is said to attract tens of thousands of people.
