Witnesses tell of embassy shoot-out

Wreckage is scattered around the area of the explosion

US officials were involved in a shoot-out with gunmen just before a massive explosion next to the American embassy in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, according to reports.

Witnesses told the BBC six gunmen exchanged fire with US officials, possibly Marines, close to an embassy entrance.

Four of the gunmen were said to have fled in a White Mercedes. The other two were reported to have been killed in the explosion that followed.
