Malawi builds elaborate tomb for Banda

In Malawi, work has started on building an elaborate tomb to honour the former president, Hastings Kamuzu Banda, who died in 1997.

The minister in charge of the project, Yusuf Mwawa, said that, on completion, Mr Banda's casket would be encased in glass and put on display in an audio-visual room.

Mr Mwawa said the two-storey mausoleum would include a library, lecture room, and have its own website.

He said he couldn't say how much it would cost to build -- other than that it would be expensive, and money from the private sector would be sought.

Hastings Banda ruled Malawi with dictatorial powers for three decades until democratic elections were held in 1994.
