Teachers protest in Mali over pay
Several hundred school teachers have demonstrated in the Malian capital, Bamako, demanding an increase in pay. They handed in a letter to the country's education ministry, requesting a one-and-a-half percent bonus. Prime Minister Mande Sidibe told parliament on Saturday that the government lacked the means to meet the teachers' claim. He also said he feared that other public sector workers would follow suit, if the teachers' demands were satisfied. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
