Police warn over rogue heroin
![]() One of the men was found dead in this block of flats
Drug users in south Wales are being warned to beware of a suspected rogue batch of heroin in circulation following the deaths of two men.
It follows the death of two men at two addresses in the Pill area Newport over the weekend. Both deaths are thought to be heroin-related, although the exact cause of death is not yet known. Police believe the heroin the men used may be of high purity and particularly dangerous, and fear other fatalities could follow. Dean Healey, who was 36, was found dead at flats in Commercial Road on Friday.
33-year-old Darren Rooney was found late on Saturday evening at a hostel in nearby Albert Street. Gwent police have set up a special inquiry team to investigate the deaths. They want to speak to people who were at the hostel where Mr Rooney died. "Obviously we need to know the source of this heroin," said Detective Inspector Geoff Ronayne. "We need to know where it's come from and I would urge any members of the Newport drugs fraternity who know anything to contact the police." They will also be contacting know drug users in the area for information. Post mortem examinations are due to take place on Tuesday to establish the exact cause of death.
