More killings in Colombia
Political violence in Colombia over the weekend has left some twenty-three people dead. In one incident, suspected right-wing paramilitaries interrogated and then executed ten people in poor neighbourhoods in the northern coastal town of Cienaga. Paramilitaries are also suspected of killing seven people along a road outside the Pacific port of Buenaventura. Reports say left-wing guerrillas shot dead six others in Barrancabermeja, in central Colombia. The police say fighting between rival left-wing guerrillas for control of the area may explain this last incident. The killings came three days before president Clinton arrives in Colombia to discuss anti-narcotics aid with the authorities. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
