New Algerian PM forms government

The new Algerian Prime Minister, Ali Benflis , has named his new cabinet, shortly after taking office from his predecessor, Ahmed Benbitour, who resigned after nine months in power.

Ali Benflis, who is a former justice minister and the President's campaign manager during last year's presidential election has retained almost all the ministers from the previous administration.

The one exception is the new foreign minister, Abdelaziz Belkhadem, a former parliamentary speaker, widely seen as an Islamic conservative opposed to any normalisation of ties with Israel.

A statement issued by Mr Benbitour said he had resigned because of differences with the President, notably over his approach to reviving the economy. The resignation comes after President Bouteflika replaced several high-ranking government officials -- reportedly for corruption.
