Algerian PM resigns

The Algerian Prime Minister, Ahmed Benbitour, has resigned after nine months in office.

He's been replaced by President Bouteflika's Chief of Staff, Ali Benflis, the President's campaign manager during last year's presidential election.

Mr Benflis has formed a government retaining almost all the ministers who held portfolios under his predecessor.

A statement issued by Mr Benbitour said he had resigned because of differences with the President, notably over his approach to reviving the economy.

The resignation comes after President Bouteflika replaced several high-ranking government officials -- reportedly for corruption.
