The low budget Welsh film 'Solomon and Gaenor' starring Ioan Gruffudd and Nia Roberts has received its American premiere.

US cinema goers had their first taste of the Oscar-nominated love story on Friday, when it went on general release across the United States.

The S4C film was made in English, Welsh and Yiddish, and has boosted the profile of both Gruffudd and Roberts.

The English version has been distributed by Sony Pictures Classics across the Atlantic.

Set against a backdrop of racial tension and industiral unrest in the Welsh Valleys of 1911, 'Solomon and Gaenor' tells a tale of forbidden love between a Welsh girl (Roberts) and a Jewish boy (Gruffudd).

Outraged members of the community attempt to destroy the pair's fragile happiness.

The production won plaudits in the UK and, in March, narrowly missed out on an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
