Jordan denies smuggling guns to Colombia

The Jordanian foreign ministry has denied official reports from Peru implicating Jordan in an arms-smuggling ring that sent weapons to left-wing rebels in Colombia through Peruvian territory.

An official statement issued in Amman said that several years ago Jordan and Peru were involved in an official and legal arms deal.

It said the Jordanian government believed Peru had been unable to control the illegal activities of members of its military, leading to the weapons falling into the hands of other parties.

On Wednesday, the Peruvian authorities lodged an official complaint with Jordan, and named three Jordanian army officers they accuse of involvement in the smuggling operation.
