Former Eton pupil detained
McDonald's under siege on May Day
Arrests were made after attack on the McDonald's diner
A former Eton schoolboy has been ordered to serve six months detention for taking part in the May Day anti-capitalism riots.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was one of a group of protesters who wrecked a McDonald's restaurant near Trafalgar Square in central London.

He was also captured on video throwing missiles at the police and smashing a crash barrier.

The youth, who was in the same year as Prince William at the exclusive Berkshire school, was sentenced by West London Youth Court on Thursday.

At an earlier hearing he pleaded guilty to violent disorder and criminal damage and was warned that custodial youth detention was "a distinct possibility".

Damage costing £50,000 was caused when a mob attacked the McDonald's restaurant on 1 May.

The same day, tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage was done across the centre of London, including the defacement of the Cenotaph war memorial.

A total of 97 people were arrested in connection with the disorder.
