Czechs want action on prostitution

The mayors of twenty-five towns in the Czech Republic have appealed to the national authorities to take action against prostitution.

The local mayors -- who represent towns in areas bordering Germany and Austria -- say rampant prostitution is causing moral devastation and rising crime.

They want the Czech government to push through legislation allowing for greater powers to deal with prostitution -- including legalising it, and moving it from the streets into public brothels.

The BBC correspondent in Prague says most of the prostitutes' customers are from Germany and Austria, attracted by the cheap sex and alcohol.
