Cambodians 'given asylum' in Sweden

Reports from Cambodia say two opposition activists accused of attempting to assassinate the Prime Minister, Hun Sen, two years ago have been given political asylum in Sweden.

The French news agency AFP quoted opposition officials as saying the two -- Mong Davuth and Korng Bunheang -- went to Sweden with the help of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. So far there's been no comment from Sweden or the UNHCR. The activists, who are members of the Cambodian opposition party led by Sam Rainsy, were arrested a year ago after an attack in 1998 on a motorcade in which Hun Sen was said to be travelling.

They were released from pre-trial detention in March this year -- and fled to Thailand in April.
