Saudi tourism
Until now, the only way for non-Arabs to enter Saudi Arabia, one of the most conservative Muslim countries in the Middle East was on business, to visit immediate family, or on a pilgrimage to Mecca. But in an effort to create jobs and diversify income away from oil, the Saudi government is opening up and is preparing to let in western tourists in large numbers for the first time. Our correspondent Frank Gardner travelled to the Asir Mountains to find out just what ¿Saudi tourism¿ might involve.
