Safari Briton killed by elephant

Victim left secure compound to photograph the animals
A Briton on safari in Kenya has been trampled to death by an elephant in a game park.

Edward Harrison, 28, was in the Masai Mara game reserve on Sunday when he ventured out of a secure compound to take a photograph of the elephant.

He was on an expedition with the Cambridge University Officer Training Corps where he was a second lieutenant.

Lt Col Simon Tustin, commanding officer of the university's Army corp said: "Edward was bright with a great desire for travel."

Mr Harrison's mother Carolynn Thompson said he was a wonderful son and man.

"He was very loving, had a huge number of friends and was a real team player," she said.

"At the same time, he had courage, determination and enthusiasm. Our whole family is devastated by his loss."

Mr Harrison, originally from Rugby, Warwickshire, graduated from St John's College, Cambridge, in 1995 with a degree in engineering.

A spokesman for the training corps was unable to confirm reports that Mr Harrison's body was found by other members of the group after they were woken by the noise of the elephant trumpeting.

In April, 20-year-old trainee nurse Andrea Taylor who was gored to death by an elephant in Thailand.

Ms Taylor, from Billinge, near Wigan, Greater Manchester, was attacked during a show at the privately-run Suan Nong Nuch park in Pattaya, south-east of Bangkok.

Her sister Helen suffered serious internal injuries and her father, Geoffrey, 53, was also hurt as they tried to rescue her.
