Turkish consumers boycott Belgian goods

Consumer associations in Turkey have launched a boycott of Belgian products.

They're protesting against Belgium's refusal to extradite a woman who's wanted for the murder of one of Turkey's most prominent industrialists.

Fehriye Erdal is accused of being involved in the killing in 1996 of Ozdemir Sabanci and two of his colleagues.

In May, the Belgian government decided that Ms Erdal couldn't be extradited because the death penalty still exists in Turkey for convicted murderers.

Although one Belgian firm has already had a contract with the Turkish navy cancelled, the BBC Ankara correspondent says it's not yet clear how widespread this boycott will become.

Turkish officials say that last year Turkey imported goods from Belgium worth one thousand million dollars.
