Filming starts of ferry wreck
An American-led team of divers has begun work on the wreck of the ferry, Estonia, which sank off the coast of Finland in 1994, killing eight-hundred-and-fifty-two people. There's fury in neighbouring countries that the wreck, which has been declared a burial site, is being violated. But Swedish and Finnish coastguards shadowing the operation say no action can be taken while the divers stay in international waters. The divers, who are being accompanied by film crews, say they're challenging the official finding that weak bow doors were torn open by heavy seas. They want to check whether there was an explosion. They arrived at the site on Tuesday, but they've been hampered by stormy weather. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
