Archaeologists in search of lost civilisation
Indian archaeologists have begun initial excavation work in a village a hundred kilometres from Delhi in the hope of finding relics of a lost civilisation. In June two villagers working in their field discovered ten kilogrammes of gold jewellery. Some experts said they believed it was from the Harappan civilisation which existed in India four thousand years ago. The initial find led to many people rushing to the area to see if they could find more gold but the site has now been sealed off and is under the control of the Indian Archeological Survey. The existence of the Harappan civilisation was first discovered by a British explorer in the nineteen-twenties. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
