Brazil's landless movement hold conference

Thousands of members of the main movement representing landless people in Brazil are taking part in its annual conference, in the capital Brasilia later today.

Land distribution in Brazil is among the most unequal in the world -- with more than ninety per cent owned by about twenty per cent of the population.

The Landless Movement argues that only conflict and land invasions have succeeded in getting the authorities to help resettle its supporters. The BBC correspondent in Brazil says it's unlikely that any new decisions will be taken, but that the delegates will discuss alternatives to the government's free market economic policies.
