Deposed Fijian leader to visit India
The Indian prime minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, says the deposed prime minister of Fiji, Mahendra Chaudhry, will visit India later this month. Speaking in New Delhi, Mr Vajpayee said India had been instrumental in mobilising international pressure on Fiji over the taking hostage of Mr Chaudhry -- an ethnic Indian -- by rebels led by George Speight. Mr Vajpayee said Fijian Indians had been denied their legitimate rights, despite their contribution to the development of their country. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
