Joe Biden's son in US hospital after a 'mild stroke'

Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, son of US Vice-President Joe Biden, has suffered a "mild stroke", the White House has said.

Beau Biden, 41, was in stable condition in hospital, officials said, adding that he was "fully alert" and with "full motor and speech skills".

He was also said to be in good spirits and talking with family members.

He had been seen as likely to win his father's former Senate seat this year, but withdrew from the race in January.

The younger Mr Biden was taken to the hospital on Tuesday morning and was expected to make a full recovery, Dr Timothy Gardner, a medical director at Christiana Care Health System in Delaware, said in a statement released by the White House.

Beau Biden in January backed out of the race for the US Senate seat held for more than three decades by this father, who quit the post representing the state of Delaware to become Barack Obama's vice-president.

The seat is currently held by Ted Kaufman, a long-time aide to Joe Biden, who was seen as keeping the seat warm for Beau Biden, according to analysts.

The move disappointed Democrats who hoped easily to keep the seat in party hands.

Republican Congressman Mike Castle now leads Democrat Chris Coons in polling ahead of the November election.

The younger Biden, who served for a year in Iraq as an officer and military lawyer, said at the time he planned to run for another term as attorney general and that he wanted to remain focused on a high-profile child molestation prosecution.

Joe Biden was treated for brain aneurysms in 1988.
