Guinea worried about foreigners

President Teodoro Obiang Nguema of Equatorial Guinea has called for permanent vigilance against neighbouring countries which he said were trying to destabilise Equatorial Guinea.

Without naming the countries, Mr Nguema said: Our neighbours are beginning to look at us with jealousy.

He said residents of foreign countries were infiltrating Equatorial Guinea with the help of the opposition.

The president was addressing a political rally in the second city, Bata, and at the same time he advised its inhabitants to arm themselves against a recent spate of violent attacks and robberies.

The government recently moved from the capital, Malabo, to Bata.
