Indian cricket great dies
The first cricket captain of independent India, Lala Amarnath, has died in Delhi at the age of 88. Amarnath began his international career in 1933, during British rule, and scored the first century by an Indian in test cricket. But he walked out of the tour of England after clashing with the then captain. He later led the Indians to victory in their first test series against Pakistan. Two of Lala Amarnath's sons, Surinder and Mohinder, went on to follow in his footsteps by playing for India. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
