SPLA says government garrisons captured
The rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army -- the SPLA -- says it has captured two key garrisons after a government offensive in the Bahr el-Ghazal region. According to a SPLA spokesman Samson Kwaje the capture of the garrisons, north of the town of Aweil, was a response to attacks SPLA units by the Sudanese army. He said casualty figures would be released later. Fighting in the long-running conflict flared up again last month with the SPLA reporting several key victories in the region. The Sudanese government has made no statement on the latest rebel report. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
