American envoy seeks Congo summit

The American special envoy to the African Great Lakes region, Howard Wolpe, has arrived in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, after a short visit to Angola.

Mr Wolpe is visiting the region's leaders to urge them to hold a summit about the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He said Washington hopes that a summit will adopt measures to implement the ceasefire agreed last year in the Lusaka accord.

Mr Wolpe also expressed the hope that the conditions would be established for deploying UN peacekeeping troops in Congo. Yesterday, the American envoy attended the Burundi peace talks that were held in South Africa.
