Floods hit Cameroon city

Reports on television and radio in Cameroon, say the country's economic capital, Douala, has been hit by heavy flooding which has affected a third of the homes.

The reports say three days of intense rains have left the city, home to two to three million people, facing its worst flooding on record.

The rains have caused residents to abandon their homes and take refuge on roofs of high buildings and trees.

"Towards mid-morning, many inhabitants couldn't stay at home because of the rising floodwaters," one Douala resident told AFP news agency.

It has also broken the bridge linking Douala and the capital Yaounde.

Residents of Doula say blocked drains in the city have contributed to the flooding.

The army has been involved in rescue operations, helping move those affected to less-flooded districts.

Provincial governor Emmanuel Eban Otong has called on residents to remain calm.
