Queen Mother - Your views

Many people are celebrating the UK's favourite grandmother's 100th birthday, but BBC News Online has been receiving a mixture of comments about the Queen Mother.

Read a selection of your views.

Although I'm not interested one way or the other about British royals, I think she has charm.

Robert Hall, USA
Having met the Queen Mother only once, and that was certainly over 20 years ago, I was extremely charmed. Often, in the presence of royalty in particular one is impressed into intimidation. But I certainly found her very interested in where I came from (San Francisco) and showed great interest. Although I'm not interested one way or the other about British royals, I think she has charm. Anybody reaching 100 deserves a tribute. I should be so lucky?
Robert Hall, USA

A sense of perspective is required. Much has been made of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's unifying role during World War II. This, however, is the same Queen Mother who supported Neville Chamberlain's policy of appeasement to the Germans and the betrayal of Czechoslovakia.
Stuart Shepherd, Lebanon

All this pomp and ceremony to celebrate the birthday of one woman who has done nothing in my eyes to deserve all the awe and praise being heaped on her. Taxpayers' money would have been better spent on a decent pension increase for the elderly, many of whom have had to work hard in life to feed and raise their families. They are more worthy of respect and praise.
Cleo Allen, England

I too, feel that her pampered lifestyle has contributed to her longevity

D. Wilson, England
I too, feel that her pampered lifestyle has contributed to her longevity. There are many centenarians in a dreadful state of health on or below the poverty line. It is just a shame that the nation does nothing for them.
D. Wilson, England

Her Majesty The Queen Mother a lady who has seen the world change greatly, a lady who has shown strength and courage for Great Britain and the Commonwealth. A lady who has always helped people by example. Always a lady! Happy birthday your Majesty.
Ashley Filkin, Australia

All this fawning is disgusting - we could all live to 100 with the royal families pampered lifestyle available to us. 25% of Britons live below the poverty line and pensioners have been offered a 75p per week pension rise.
Dave, UK

Your unfailing devotion to public service is an inspiration to all of us

Jenny Kolb, South Africa
I would like to thank you for all that you have done over the past century. Your unfailing devotion to public service is an inspiration to all of us who have followed your life's story, milestone by milestone. May you have a very happy 100th birthday and may God spare you for yet a few more.
Jenny Kolb, South Africa

My Grandmother is 97 and a lifelong supporter of the Royal Family. However, even she commented that the month long celebrations for someone who has lived a life of comfort and without toil was completely over the top and a waste of tax payer's money.
Jim, UK

As an American watching you from afar, you have always been a symbol of dignity, respect and calm in an often-troubled world. May you have 100 more great years, Your Majesty!
Serge Grynkewich, Philippines

It is interesting to note that the majority of the positive messages come from abroad. Perhaps it is an indication of the times that the most unknown "Royal" is also the most popular. What this says about the state of the British psyche doesn't leave much to the imagination.
Justin Morgan, Hungary

You remind me of my great grandmother who is 91. She is such a strong woman, raised 7 kids on her own, through WWII and hasn't looked back. What a blessing for society to have such strong women! You have been a role model for so many people, not only through your great efforts for the people of London during the Blitz, but also in being such an "untarnished" member of the Royal Family.
Erin, France (Australian)

A quiet drink at the palace with a few dignitaries would have been enough

M Owens, NY, USA
The Queen mother is not the only Centarian in town and the lavish month-long birthday parties seem extravagant in the extreme when it is the British taxpayer who is footing the bill. A quiet drink at the palace with a few dignitaries would have been enough.
M Owens, NY, USA

Lots of other people reach 100 years old in this country, these are the same people that have struggled through retirement to pay heating and food bills and live in fear of robbery and attack and have to wait for years on NHS operation waiting lists in pain. Surely these are the people who we should celebrate for surviving, not someone who has never had to want for anything.
Sarah, UK

The Queen Mother is one of the few remaining Royals that the public can aspire too. She has done so much for this country. She is a brilliant woman that everyone can look up too. I am thankful for being born in a time where I can catch a first hand experience of what the Queen Mother is really like.
Ms. Jones, England

To those who are critical of Her Majesty, I only have to write that they are ignorant of history

Tyler Warfield, USA
To HM Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, I wish a joyous 100th birthday. To those who are critical of Her Majesty, I only have to write that they are ignorant of history and know nothing of the sacrifices made by Their Majesties during the War. My grandmother, who turns 100 four days after Her Majesty, served in the US allied forces in the United Kingdom for four years and has often spoke about all that HM King George and HM Queen Elizabeth did during the War to keep up morale which was essential for victory. God bless you ma'am!
Tyler Warfield, USA

While anybody who survives to see a hundredth birthday is worthy of respect, I can't help but feel that she is undeserving of this (inter)national outpouring of awe and deference. She did live through some of the most difficult times in modern British history, but she did so from the most privileged, unquestioned and insulated of positions. Would she be as popular, or as long in the tooth, if she had been subjected to the same media scrutiny as her grandchildren? Are they perhaps paying her debts to British society with their privacy?
Barry Ryan, Ireland

After all this country has given this woman, it is about time we got a birthday present. Why don't the entire royal family abdicate and allow us to start the millennium as a true democracy unencumbered by hide bound tradition, pomp and ceremony. Pensioners get 75p increase while Mrs Windsor gets £7.9 million a year for the next ten years.
Simon Hart, UK

I do not agree at all with the Queen Mother's critics, that say we are paying out a fortune in tax each year to keep her alive. Any amount would not even begin to repay the work she has done for this country.
Darren White, England

I am pleased she has reached 100, but most people would if they led a pampered life.
Zoe West, England

Apart from being seen in among the rubble, when the planes had safely passed over, what has she done?

Paul Stanley, UK
Apart from being seen in among the rubble, when the planes had safely passed over, what has she done? She's had enough of my taxes so far and now she wants a birthday card as well?
My grandmother lost a husband to war injuries, two sons to diphtheria and poverty, and had to place two daughters in an orphanage. A few less visits and a bit more cash redistribution would have been welcome.
Paul Stanley, UK

HRH The Queen Mother - a pillar in yesterday's, today's, and tomorrow's society

Colin May, England
HRH The Queen Mother, a pillar in yesterday's, today's, and tomorrow's society, respected, admired, and loved. Someone this country has every right to be proud of. Many happy returns!
Colin May, England

Her Majesty's warmth, dignity, royalty open-heartedness, courage and endurance has always been deeply admired by the British people and the peoples throughout the Commonwealth and the whole world. In the same way these virtues were respected and even feared by her enemies in times of war. What a Grand Lady! Happy Birthday Ma'am and many happy returns!
Andre Wyss, Switzerland

No offence to the "Queen Mother", but what has she done that's so wonderful, apart from live in the lap of luxury at the taxpayers' expense? My grandmother has worked hard all her life and now struggles to pay her heating bills. She has more dignity in her fingertip than the Queen Mother or any of the rest of the scrounging English Royal Family have in their entire bodies.
Phil Sands, Scotland

Happy Birthday! You hold such a special place in the hearts of Americans - especially me with my roots dating back to 1279 in London
Larry Hermann, USA

She should be thanking the British people for 100 years of luxurious living

Jennifer Way, USA
While I'm sure it is quite amazing to reach 100 in relatively good health, I fail to see why the Queen Mum's birthday is newsworthy. Her fabulous life is at the expense of Britain's taxpaying "subjects." And for all that glamour, adulation, and prestige, what has the Queen Mum done for Britain? She should be thanking the British people for 100 years of luxurious living.
Jennifer Way, USA
