Queen Mother - Your views ![]() Read a selection of your views.
Robert Hall, USA
A sense of perspective is required. Much has been made of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's unifying role during World War II. This, however, is the same Queen Mother who supported Neville Chamberlain's policy of appeasement to the Germans and the betrayal of Czechoslovakia.
All this pomp and ceremony to celebrate the birthday of one woman who has done nothing in my eyes to deserve all the awe and praise being heaped on her. Taxpayers' money would have been better spent on a decent pension increase for the elderly, many of whom have had to work hard in life to feed and raise their families. They are more worthy of respect and praise.
D. Wilson, England Her Majesty The Queen Mother a lady who has seen the world change greatly, a lady who has shown strength and courage for Great Britain and the Commonwealth. A lady who has always helped people by example. Always a lady! Happy birthday your Majesty.
All this fawning is disgusting - we could all live to 100 with the royal families pampered lifestyle available to us. 25% of Britons live below the poverty line and pensioners have been offered a 75p per week pension rise.
Jenny Kolb, South Africa My Grandmother is 97 and a lifelong supporter of the Royal Family. However, even she commented that the month long celebrations for someone who has lived a life of comfort and without toil was completely over the top and a waste of tax payer's money.
As an American watching you from afar, you have always been a symbol of dignity, respect and calm in an often-troubled world. May you have 100 more great years, Your Majesty!
It is interesting to note that the majority of the positive messages come from abroad. Perhaps it is an indication of the times that the most unknown "Royal" is also the most popular. What this says about the state of the British psyche doesn't leave much to the imagination.
You remind me of my great grandmother who is 91.
She is such a strong woman, raised 7 kids on her own, through WWII and hasn't looked back.
What a blessing for society to have such strong women! You have been a role model for so many people, not only through your great efforts for the people of London during the Blitz, but also in being such an "untarnished" member of the Royal Family.
M Owens, NY, USA Lots of other people reach 100 years old in this country, these are the same people that have struggled through retirement to pay heating and food bills and live in fear of robbery and attack and have to wait for years on NHS operation waiting lists in pain. Surely these are the people who we should celebrate for surviving, not someone who has never had to want for anything.
The Queen Mother is one of the few remaining Royals that the public can aspire too. She has done so much for this country. She is a brilliant woman that everyone can look up too. I am thankful for being born in a time where I can catch a first hand experience of what the Queen Mother is really like.
Tyler Warfield, USA
While anybody who survives to see a hundredth birthday is worthy of respect, I can't help but feel that she is undeserving of this (inter)national outpouring of awe and deference. She did live through some of the most difficult times in modern British history, but she did so from the most privileged, unquestioned and insulated of positions. Would she be as popular, or as long in the tooth, if she had been subjected to the same media scrutiny as her grandchildren? Are they perhaps paying her debts to British society with their privacy?
After all this country has given this woman, it is about time we got a birthday present. Why don't the entire royal family abdicate and allow us to start the millennium as a true democracy unencumbered by hide bound tradition, pomp and ceremony.
Pensioners get 75p increase while Mrs Windsor gets £7.9 million a year for the next ten years.
I do not agree at all with the Queen Mother's critics, that say we are paying out a fortune in tax each year to keep her alive. Any amount would not even begin to repay the work she has done for this country.
I am pleased she has reached 100, but most people would if they led a pampered life.
My grandmother lost a husband to war injuries, two sons to diphtheria and poverty, and had to place two daughters in an orphanage. A few less visits and a bit more cash redistribution would have been welcome. Paul Stanley, UK
Colin May, England Her Majesty's warmth, dignity, royalty open-heartedness, courage and endurance has always been deeply admired by the British people and the peoples throughout the Commonwealth and the whole world. In the same way these virtues were respected and even feared by her enemies in times of war.
What a Grand Lady!
Happy Birthday Ma'am and many happy returns!
No offence to the "Queen Mother", but what has she done that's so wonderful, apart from live in the lap of luxury at the taxpayers' expense?
My grandmother has worked hard all her life and now struggles to pay her heating bills. She has more dignity in her fingertip than the Queen Mother or any of the rest of the scrounging English Royal Family have in their entire bodies.
Happy Birthday! You hold such a special place in the hearts of Americans - especially me with my roots dating back to 1279 in London
Jennifer Way, USA
