Man in court over Thompson attack

A man is expected to appear in court charged in connection with the assault on the son of the late Glasgow gangster Arthur Thompson.
Billy Thompson is recovering in hospital after being found with serious head injuries near a post office in Royston Road, Provanmill, on Sunday. A 19-year-old is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Friday.
His 33-year-old son was found with stab wounds and taken to the Southern General Hospital in a critical condition. The alleged attack took place just 400 yards from the family home, where Mr Thompson junior's brother Arthur was shot and killed in 1991. Mr Thompson senior was well known as one of Scotland's most dangerous gangsters and was said to have worked closely with the Kray twins. He died from a heart attack in 1993. Tragedy has hit the family more than once - before the death of Arthur junior, Margaret, his sister, died from a drugs overdose in 1989. Sole survivor Billy Thompson has served prison sentences, the most recent for possessing a harpoon gun. He was given two-and-a-half years, later reduced on appeal to 18 months.
