Uproar in Uganda after nude display

The Ugandan government has threatened to ban beauty competitions after a contest in which several contestants appeared nude.

The show, held in the capital, Kampala, has caused controversy in the country with pictures of the event appearing in newspapers.

Twenty-two women took part in the contest -- some of them topless and wearing only banana leaves elsewhere.

Correspondents said the show was well attended.

Uganda's Interior Minister Edward Reugamayo has condemned the event as a violation of Ugandan culture and called for the organisers to be prosecuted. A police spokesman said a search for the organisers was underway but he refused to comment on whether they would be arrested.
