Ivory Coast journalists detained

Military officials in Ivory Coast say they're holding two journalists for questioning over a newspaper article allegedly defaming the country's military ruler, General Robert Guei.

The journalists, Yoro Kone, and Kristian Kara, both from the newspaper, The Liberal, were detained on Wednesday after alleging the General had spent almost one-and-a-half-million dollars for electoral campaign purposes.

General Guei has never declared his intention to stand for the presidency.

The Liberal is widely regarded as backing the opposition RDR party, led by the former prime minister, Alassane Outtara.

Mr Outtara is one of the key figures expected to stand in the poll due to be held in September.
