Mozambican to head Angola UN office

The United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, has appointed a Mozambican diplomat and law professor to head the UN office in Angola.

Mussagy Jeichande will head the office which was set up in October last year as a a step towards restoring a UN presence in Angola.

The office will work with the authorities in Angola to restore peace, provide humanitarian aid and promote human rights.

UNITA rebels and the Angolan government restarted a twenty-year-old civil war in December 1998, forcing UN peacekeepers to leave the country.
