Spain: Oil discharges into River Tagus

There's been a big fuel spillage from a power station in central Spain.

An estimated two-hundred-and-fifty thousand litres of highly toxic oil discharged into the River Tagus on Tuesday, creating an eight-kilometre long slick.

Water to the nearby historic city of Toledo was cut off, and farmers in the area were warned not to use the river to irrigate their land.

The authorities in Spain said workers were trying to keep the spill from spreading.

Spanish radio said the accident was caused by a leak in a fuel depot at the power station.
