Paraguay's Oviedo intervenes in elections
The former Paraguayan army commander, General Lino Oviedo, has made an unexpected intervention in elections for a new vice-president next week. He's called on his supporters to vote for the opposition challenger rather than back his own party's candidate. General Oviedo is in detention in Brazil fighting extradition to Paraguay, where he's wanted in connection with the killing last year of the former vice-president, Luis Maria Argana. General Oviedo and Mr Argana were bitter enemies within the Colorado party, and Mr Argana's son, Felix, is standing to replace his father as vice president. Correspondents say the call is a further attempt by General Oviedo to destabilise the Colorado Party government. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
