Salmonella-free eggs

Scientists in Britain say they've developed the first egg to be guaranteed free of salmonella, which can cause acute food poisoning.

They've found a way to pasteurise eggs, using a special oven, but without actually cooking them.

The BBC consumer affairs correspondent says the eggs look and taste virtually the same as untreated ones.

After a health scare in Britain in the 1980s, chickens were vaccinated against salmonella, people were warned against eating raw eggs, and cases of salmonella poisoning dropped dramatically.
