Nuclear protest ends after two decades

A campaign by anti-nuclear protesters in Britain which began at the height of the Cold War has finally ended.

The last of the peace women, as they were known, left the Greenham Common site -- nineteen years after the protest began.

At one stage tens of thousands of women were camped outside an American airbase on the common, protesting at the cruise missiles stored inside.

The protest continued even after the end of the cold war and the departure of the missiles, to show the women's continued opposition to nuclear weapons.

The BBC British affairs correspondent says the camp was one of the most enduring symbols of the Cold War.
