Waterskier killed by speedboat
A waterskier has been killed in an accident involving a speedboat on the coast at Brightlingsea, Essex.
It is believed the 27-year-old man was trying to get into the boat which was towing him when the incident happened. Thames coastguard co-ordinated a rescue operation involving an air ambulance and police marine unit, but the man was declared dead at the scene. A report is being prepared for the coroner.
Judge's daughter faces drugs charge The daughter of a judge faces drugs charges after one of her friends died from an apparent drugs overdose at a party in her house. Sonya Burke, the daughter of deputy High Court judge Jeffrey Burke QC, has been charged following the death of Adam Brownlow, 23. He collapsed at Ms Burke's 23rd birthday party in the village of Dagworth in Suffolk in May. Ms Burke was charged with allowing the premises to be used for the purposes of drugs consumption and will appear at Bury St Edmunds magistrates court on 20 September.
'Domestic' forces jet down A British Airways jet has been diverted during a cross-Atlantic flight because of a couple arguing in economy class. The man and woman, thought to be married and American, began fighting at 30,000ft above eastern Canada. They were detained by police when BA flight 278 from Los Angeles to Heathrow touched down in Chicago. The jet arrived at Heathrow three hours late on Friday. The airline has confirmed the couple will not be allowed onto another BA flight.
Stab victim loses leg A car mechanic has had a leg amputated after being stabbed. Warren Davids, 24, from Tottenham, north London, was attacked in Islington on Tuesday. He is still critically ill. Police are appealing for witnesses who saw Mr Davids in a confrontation with two black men. Det Insp Richard Jack of Islington CID said: "This is an appalling attack on this young man."
Rapist exposed to HIV Police have launched a search for a rapist who could have caught HIV from his victim. A 27-year-old woman, who told police she was carrying the HIV virus, was raped in Gloucester Park, Gloucester between 2000 and 2100 BST on Thursday. A Gloucestershire police spokeswoman said: "We can confirm the woman was HIV positive. The woman disclosed she was suffering from a contagious disease. "It is believed her attacker would have been exposed to the risk of contracting the disease as a result of this serious sexual assault."
