Argentine president in Mexico

The Argentine president, Fernando de la Rua, is continuing a visit to Mexico, meeting business leaders and the president-elect, Vicente Fox.

Mr de la Rua, who held talks with President Ernesto Zedillo on Monday, is aiming to boost bilateral trade.

But his visit is being overshadowed by the controversy surrounding a former Argentine navy officer, Ricardo Miguel Cavallo, who was arrested last month in Mexico.

A Spanish judge has charged Mr Cavallo with genocide, terrorism and torture, allegedly committed during military rule in Argentina, and is expected to seek his extradition.

Mr de la Rua has argued that Argentina has territorial jurisdiction in the case. Later today, the Argentine president travels to New York to attend the UN Millennium Summit.
