Jailed Russian editor remains defiant

A leading Russian newspaper editor who has just spent five days in jail for publishing alleged transcripts of telephone conversations between top officials says she will continue to publish whatever she thinks necessary.

The editor, Irina Grebneva, of Arsenievskie Vesti, says she did not eat or drink during her imprisonment as a protest against what she said were attempts to stifle free speech.

She had published transcripts of phone calls attributed to a regional governor, Yevgeny Nazdratenko, his first deputy, Konstantin Tolstoshein, and the mayor of Vladivostok, Yuri Kopylov, allegedly about ways to ensure Kopylov's victory in mayoral elections last year.
