British soldier killed in Afghanistan

A British soldier from 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh died as a result of a gunshot wound in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said.

The soldier died on Wednesday and next of kin have been informed.

He was on foot patrol when he was killed in an exchange of fire with insurgents near Showal, in the Nad-e-Ali District of Helmand Province.

The number of British military personnel killed on operations in Afghanistan since 2001 is now 281.
